Writing can be a powerful tool for self-care. Mindful writing allows us to tap into the power of the moment to bring greater calm and connect more deeply with ourselves.
I’m passionate about the power of writing to heal and calm. This comes from my own experience of living through trauma. I know how much writing helped me at that time and, through teaching at Converge, I’ve witnessed the benefits for others. You don’t have to take my word for it though, there are numerous studies that show writing benefits mental health and increases self-awareness.
When the Covid Pandemic started in March 2020 I wanted to share what I’d learned to help others through these difficult times. I started running sessions on Zoom for friends and these soon grew until I was leading two sessions a week for people from all over the country.
What is mindful writing?
Mindful writing is based on the fundamental principles of mindfulness:
- intention to cultivate awareness;
- attention to what is happening; and
- an attitude that is non-judgemental, curious and kind.
By applying these to our writing we can explore our creativity, uncover new truths and find greater connections to ourselves.

What can you expect to get out of a session?

- Gentle and supportive guidance from an experienced teacher.
How do sessions work?
In each session, I’ll provide a variety of different prompts to get the words flowing. All of the prompts are designed to promote mindfulness, calm and relaxation. There is no pressure to share your work but there is an opportunity to do so if you wish.
Do you need to be a writer to join?
Absolutely not. The group is a mixture of people who’d never written before (and now include writing as an essential part of their self-care routine) and people who already wrote regularly.
You don’t need to be an experienced or skilled writer to join the group. You just need to be willing to see where the words take you. All you need is pen and paper and a quiet space to write.
Online Mindful Writing Group
My online mindful writing group meets monthly. I run sessions on the second Monday of each month and on the following Wednesday. The dates for 2022 are listed here. The Wednesday session is a repeat of the Monday session. Both sessions start at 6.30pm (UK time) and last for 45 minutes.
