Mindful Writing

Writing can be a powerful tool for self-care. Mindful writing allows us to tap into the power of the moment to bring greater calm and clarity to our lives.

“Sit down right now. Give me this moment. Write whatever’s running through you…”
Natalie Goldberg, Writing Down the Bones

I’m passionate about the power of writing to heal and calm. This comes from my own experience of living through trauma. I know how much writing helped me at that time and when the Covid Pandemic started in March 2020 I wanted to share what I’d learned to help others through these difficult times. I started running sessions on Zoom for friends and these soon grew until I was leading two sessions a week for writers from all over the country. As well as I leading monthly online mindful writing groups, I facilitate mindful writing one-day retreats in beautiful Whitby on the Yorkshire coast.

What is mindful writing?

Mindful writing is based on the fundamental principles of mindfulness:

  • intention to cultivate awareness;
  • attention to what is happening; and
  • an attitude that is non-judgemental, curious and kind.

By applying these to our writing we can explore our creativity, uncover new truths and find greater connections to our emotions.

“Writing specifically, writing detail by detail, we encounter not only ourselves, not only our own truth, but the greater truth that stands behind all art and all communication.”

Julia Cameron, The Writer’s Life

Online Sessions

How do sessions work?

In each session, I’ll provide a variety of different prompts to get the words flowing. All of the prompts are designed to promote mindfulness, calm and relaxation. There is no pressure to share your work but there is an opportunity to do so if you wish.

Do you need to be a writer to join?

Absolutely not. The group is a mixture of people who’d never written before (and now include writing as an essential part of their self-care routine) and people who already wrote regularly.

You don’t need to be an experienced or skilled writer to join the group. You just need to be willing to see where the words take you. All you need is pen and paper and a quiet space to write.

Online Mindful Writing Group

My online mindful writing group meets monthly. I run sessions on the second Monday of each month and on the following Wednesday. The dates for 2022 are listed here. The Wednesday session is a repeat of the Monday session. Both sessions start at 6.30pm (UK time) and last for 45 minutes.

The sessions cost £5. If you’d like to join, please scroll down to pay by Paypal or email me at alex@greenmanwords.co.uk.

I know everyone in the group will make you very welcome!

What people say after attending a session…

“They are without doubt the highlight of my week and keep my mind nourished for days afterwards.” Ruth

Mindful Writing Retreats

Enjoying the fabulous lunch at Mount House

I also lead one-day mindful writing retreats at Mount House in Whitby. As well as guided writing workshops in the morning and afternoon, there’s a lovely lunch (vegetarian and vegan options available), a mindful walk on the beach and tea and cake at the end of the day.

Mount House is a beautiful Georgian guest house in the heart of Whitby. During each retreat day, there are opportunities to write at the writing desks overlooking the harbour.

Rooms are available for anyone wishing to stay over. These are booked by arrangement with Ruth at Mount House who offers preferential rates to guests who are taking part in the retreats.

Dates for mindful writing retreats in 2022 will be released shortly.

What people say after attending a retreat…

“A well-run course, with a sensitive and insightful tutor and providing an opportunity for mindful writing in a safe and welcoming atmosphere.” Judith
